Are you entitled to BAföG?
BAföG is under certain conditions available to students who cannot finance their studies with their own funds. If you want to know whether you are entitled to BAföG or not, just take a look at studis-online. Here you will find a lot of information about BAföG and a BAföG calculator that you can use to calculate your (possible) BAföG individually. International students are generally not entitled to BAföG.
Enrol first, then submit your application
You must first be enrolled in order to submit an application. You should apply for BAföG as soon as you are admitted to your degree programme, but no later than the first month of lectures. Educational grants are awarded from the month of application at the earliest. Missing documents can, of course, be submitted later. Simply submit your application online atstwda.de/studienfinanzierung/bafoeg.
Don't forget: submit a new application every two semesters
If you are eligible for BAföG, you must reapply every year or every two semesters. In addition, at the end of the fourth semester, you must have a certificate filled out that provides information on whether you are studying according to the rules, i.e. whether the usual academic achievements have been made (Form 5). You can get more information from your department or your student council.
